Taiwanese Heritage Foods Gift Set

$120.00
$138.50

Inspired by Clarissa Wei’s cookbook Made In Taiwan—an absolute frolic through the Taiwanese culinary tradition—this bundle pulls together hard-to-find, classical Taiwanese ingredients that will bring you back to the nostalgic flavors of home. For good measure, we’ve thrown in a Tatung rice cooker pin, because what is Taiwanese food without its steam cooker?

You’ll see the tagline “古早味 Old Style Flavor” printed on street stalls and food packaging across Taiwan. It’s meant to telegraph traditional recipes, ingredients, and vibe. This means different things to different people, but because the food of Taiwan can’t be divorced from its historical and cultural underpinnings, it’s definitely a point of pride. What does it mean to eat Taiwanese? What was Taiwanese food and what is it becoming? The past emerges in the lens of the present.

Bundle Contents

This bundle includes:

Made In Taiwan: Recipes from the Island Nation by Clarissa Wei (autographed)
optional
Published in September 2023, this new cookbook takes a journalistic approach in documenting over one hundred Taiwanese recipes that define the cuisine.

Soy Paste with Glutinous Rice Grains
A soy sauce drizzle special to Taiwan, made by thickening naturally fermented soy sauce with glutinous rice grains.

Wu Yin Black Vinegar
Taiwanese black vinegar is more closely related to Tonkatsu and Worcestershire sauce than Chinese Black Vinegars, indicative of Taiwan’s past as a Japanese colony. This one is fruit, sweet, and makes a great dip for a xiao long bao.

Organic Dried Shiitake Mushroom (Log-Grown)
High mountain shiitake mushrooms are truly old school, especially when grown on the logs of the native Formosan Sweet Gum tree and smoke-dried over longan wood. Shockingly aromatic.

Preserved Daikon Radish
A classic Hakka preserve that has situated itself firmly in Taiwanese cuisine, especially in the dish Preserved Daikon Omelet 菜脯蛋. Salt-cured and hand-packed.

Dried Irwin Mango
Not exactly native to Taiwan, but more enmeshed in the Taiwanese fruit psyche than the McIntosh apple in New England. Sweet and juicy, these are the best dried mangoes you’ll find this side of Pingtung. Sourced from independent fruit farmers in Taiwan.

Tatung Rice Cooker Enamel Pin
bundle exclusive
This half-inch pin from our favorite souvenir store in Taipei is a tribute to the Tatung electric steamer. Before it was invented, Taiwanese families were cooking meals outside on coals. It was a social revolution when steam cookers came on the scene, and the timbre of Taiwanese home cooking has never been the same. This appliance has a dedicated spread in Clarissa’s cookbook.

Ga Ji Dai Gift Box
Silkscreened in Taiwan, the outer box is inspired by Ga Ji Dai, a traditional Taiwanese market tote in a technicolor palette. Designed by our friends and collaborators O.OO, a Taipei-based design studio and print shop.

Our 2023 Holiday Gift Collection

This holiday, the Yun Hai team put together five thematic gift boxes that reflect different aspects of Taiwanese cuisine and its champions. In addition to carefully selected Yun Hai products, each assortment features a special item exclusive to the set, probably hand-carried back from Taiwan by Yun Hai Shop co-owner Lillian.

Each set is packaged in a custom silkscreened box featuring the red, green, and blue Ga Ji Dai motif of Taiwan's traditional market totes. These boxes are designed to fit perfectly within our standard shippable mailer; send direct and customize your own gift note too.
