Harvesting Ai Yu Jelly 愛玉
in Alishan, near the Zou aboriginal village of Da Bang 達邦
We source Ai Yu figs grown on aboriginal land in Alishan. The vines in the forest were planted a generation ago and are 30-40 years old.
They are harvested by slicing the stems with a hook on a modified fishing rod. When they fall, harvesters gather and pack them.
Here, harvesters cross the Dabang Suspension Bridge 達邦吊橋 to return to their village, but depending on weather conditions, they may need to walk older mountain paths.
Back at the village, the figs are peeled by hand, sun dried for a few days, turned inside out, and left to sun dry again. Once ready, they are scraped off and packaged.
