The Tatung Electric Rice Cooker and Steamer is an essential Taiwanese appliance that has been in production for over 60 years. It is beloved for its simplicity, versatility, and durability. Though known primarily as a rice cooker, it's actually a double boiler and steamer. Use it to gently cook braises and stews, steam breads and buns, and reheat leftovers. A simple and flexible cooker with many applications, the Tatung Rice Cooker and Steamer is an icon of classic Taiwanese design and daily life.

Yun Hai has partnered with Tatung Company to bring the original pea green and vermillion red colors to the US, invoking fond memories of many a happy childhood meal. This green 6-cup Tatung Steamer is available in the US exclusively through Yun Hai, an official Tatung distributor. If color's not your thing, we also sell the appliance with a stainless steel exterior, a minimalist aesthetic that vibes well with a commercial or industrial kitchen interior.

This appliance and included accessories (other than the rice cup and rice paddle) are made from 18-8 (SUS304) stainless steel, which is corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, and non-reactive when exposed to acidic foods. The stainless steel Tatung steamers are a healthy, high-quality alternative to Teflon-coated rice cookers, which may contain harmful chemicals that may wear away or be released into the air under certain conditions.

It’s a wonderful size for a small family or a small apartment. Use it to make rice (and oatmeal!), steam buns and baozi, braise tea eggs, prepare soups and stews, and even reheat leftovers. It can cook up to 6 cups of rice, which will feed 6 people or 3 cyclists after a race. It does all the things the larger 11-cup can do, but on a smaller scale.

Q: How is this different from the 11-cup steamer?

A: It’s a smaller size that has the same functionality, but fits less. For example, instead of using a whole fish for steamed fish, you might need to use a fillet. It’s a great size for an individual who loves to cook, a couple, or a small family. Or, if you want to save on counter space.

The Table of Rice to Water Cooking Ratios is located in the Tatung user manual, which is included in every package. This table is a general suggestion for short-grain white rice. Depending on the type of rice used and the desired texture, the amount of water may need to be adjusted.

THE COMPONENTS

The Tatung steamer comes with the appliance’s outer pot and lid, a steaming insert, an inner pot with a lid, a measuring cup (180 ml), and a rice spatula.

PREPPING THE STEAMER TO COOK

Place the food into the inner pot or atop the steamer insert. Then pour water into the outer pot. The amount of water you put into the outer pot determines how long the steamer runs.

JUST ONE BUTTON TO COOK

Plug your Tatung in and push the lever down to begin steaming. Once the lever pops, the switch above the lever allows you to turn on Keep Warm mode, which maintains the appliance in a state of gentle heat.
